In 2017, a report from BloombergNEF wrote that electric vehicles would make up 54% of new car sales worldwide by 2040. In the 2020 version, published after the start of COVID-19, BloombergNEF forecasted that EVs would make up 58% of global car sales by 2040. While we have not yet reached that adoption rate, millions of drivers have already embraced the eco-friendly allure of EV ownership. But it’s not just about protecting the planet. Electric vehicles and EV charging networks are also beneficial for your wallet and time.

Can the US Reach 50 Million EVs in Operation by 2030?

One thing that really stood out for me was Mary’s opening salvo that in order to achieve climate goal targets, the US would need to reach 50 million (or about 1/5) of vehicles in operation being electric by 2030. I found the genesis of this forecast in a December 2019 Rocky Mountain Institute blog by Britta, 1 in 5 Cars Need to Be Electric by 2030: What Will it Take?

I recently had an opportunity to drive a Nissan Leaf for a period of four days. I was struck by how easy it was to incorporate into my usual habits…and how much energy (and cost) I saved in that period. The car is not a sleeper (car-lover jargon for a car with something special going on that tries to look normal). It is emblazoned with Schneider Electric logos and graphics (and the Earth Rangers Centre too!), and it points out that Schneider Electric can provide customers with EV charging solutions.
