Testing The Giant Green Button – Does It Really Deserve The Space It Takes Up On The Handlebars?

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / July 24, 2015 Paul from em3ev threw in a free Giant Green Button with our last $4,200 order so I could write a review for it because I was too cheap to spend $6 on one. It took me several weeks to get around mounting it to a build and try it but I finally did and was under-whelmed. This button is designed as temporary PAS cutout for the BBS02 so you can shift without grinding the gears and chain together. What I keep calling the Giant Green Button is actually pretty tiny.   Installation takes all of 5 minutes, you...

BBS02\BBSHD Ebrakes

Posted by Tom Lee on

One of the first things that most people think when they open up their BBS02 kit is they take one look at the handbrakes and are left wondering how such a nice kit comes with such crappy brakes. Hydraulic brakes are the defacto standard for most people who ride ebikes in the US which turns a 30 minutes install job into several hours as people scratch their heads wondering how to install the ebrakes on a hydraulic braking system. Here are some options that will help you through. Perfect for a scooter or motorcycle, but a little much for a bicycle. Option 1)...

Installing A Temperature Sensor In The BBS02 Unit

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / June 7, 2015 Heat is the enemy. A $2 thermometer can save your $80 controller and a lot of headaches. Electric motors can often take far more power put through them than their nominal rating, but over time the heat will build up and cause all sorts of problems. Mosfets can blow, phase wire insulation can melt, windings can fuse together. When the motor starts being under high torque load and the RPM speed is slow the electricity flowing through the windings mostly turns into waste heat. The best way to keep your BBS02 from blowing is to mount...

BBS02 Chainrings

Posted by Tom Lee on

Most BBS02 units ship with either the 48 or 46 tooth Chaining. The first thing you will notice about the stock chainring is the weight (over 400grams). It is stamped in steel and the heft makes it clear that it is unlikely that you’ll have to be replacing it on a regular basis. One of the issues with direct drive is that you can wear through the chains, chainrings and cassettes quite fast when you consider that the average human puts out about 100 watts of power and the BBS02 easily puts out close to 1000. Lekkie custom ring is...

Take A Wild Guess : Selecting The Best Front Chainring Size For A Mid-drive Ebike On The First Try

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / May 26, 2017 One of the most common emails I get from builders is people needing help trying to select a front chainring size for their ebike build. The whole process of deciding a chainring size for your first mid drive can be a complex and unintuitive process for the uninitiated. Getting the right chainring size has a lot to do with The diameter of your ebike wheel (smaller wheel = bigger chainring) Whether you are using a cassette, single speed or IGH and the size of the rear cog(s) What you want the top speed of your ebike to...
