BBS02 Chainrings

Posted by Tom Lee on

Most BBS02 units ship with either the 48 or 46 tooth Chaining. The first thing you will notice about the stock chainring is the weight (over 400grams). It is stamped in steel and the heft makes it clear that it is unlikely that you’ll have to be replacing it on a regular basis. One of the issues with direct drive is that you can wear through the chains, chainrings and cassettes quite fast when you consider that the average human puts out about 100 watts of power and the BBS02 easily puts out close to 1000. Lekkie custom ring is...

Take A Wild Guess : Selecting The Best Front Chainring Size For A Mid-drive Ebike On The First Try

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / May 26, 2017 One of the most common emails I get from builders is people needing help trying to select a front chainring size for their ebike build. The whole process of deciding a chainring size for your first mid drive can be a complex and unintuitive process for the uninitiated. Getting the right chainring size has a lot to do with The diameter of your ebike wheel (smaller wheel = bigger chainring) Whether you are using a cassette, single speed or IGH and the size of the rear cog(s) What you want the top speed of your ebike to...

BBS02\BBSHD\Ultra Max Displays

Posted by Tom Lee on

There are many different displays sold with the BBS02/BBSHD drive units. Some vendors allow you to choose, others will ship you whatever you get and that’s what you’re stuck with. Any of these displays should work with either the BBS01, BBS02, BBSHD or the Ultra Max. C961 C961 the cheapest and easiest to get of the three displays The C961 is the oldest and has a small display with the three buttons separate from the unit. It has the least amount of functionality but is the most commonly seen with the BBS02 drive unit. It has no watt meter unlike...

BBS02 Installation

Posted by Tom Lee on

The stock BBS02 can be installed by almost anyone with a little bike mechanic know how in an hour or three. Before you start you need to consider a few things. 1) Is my battery really capable of driving my unit? If you bought your battery and BBS02 from a reputable vendor then chances are they have set the Amperage draw on the BBS02 controller to match what the BMS on the battery can provide. If the draw is too high then the BMS will be stressed and can shut down. If the draw is too low then you are...

Troubleshooting Problems On Your BBS02 Unit

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / October 2, 2015 I have no idea how I got this much mud inside the drive unit. In so many ways Bafang’s BBS02 750W drive unit is a dream come true. Almost anyone with very little technical know how can order a drive kit and 48v-52v battery pack and have it installed and running on almost any bike with 2-3 hours of work. Any other mid-drive ebike kit is going to take a lot more time and energy to install and get working properly. The problems arise when things suddenly stop working. Take a BBS02 drive unit into almost any bike shop that doesn’t...
