A Hacker’s Guide To Programming The BBS02 & BBSHD
Posted by Tom Lee on
Karl Gesslein / June 26, 2015 One way that the BBS02 middrive unit shines over other competition like the Bosch is the ability to program the controller yourself. Although the process of programming the controller will void any warranty that you got with the unit, to many people the risk of voiding their warranty is outweighed by the possibility of getting more performance or having the PAS settings more to their liking. There are 3 settings that most reputable resellers of the BBS02 will set for you. Low Voltage Shutoff (in Volts) Limited Current (in Amps) Speed Limit Update: The BBSHD is programmed...
Programming The BBS02 & BBSHD Without Frying Your Controller And Losing Your Sanity

Karl Gesslein / March 17, 2015 For information on the programming parameters and what they do you should check out The Hackers Guide to Programming the BBS02 located here. UPDATE: The BBSHD is programmed in the exact same way with the same software as the BBS02. Just make sure you set the Limited Current (Amps) to 30 not 25 which is the most the BBS02 can handle. I’ve watched this thread on Endless-Sphere and spent a few hours building several of my own cables (as shown here) using different USB\Serial adapters bought on ebay and BBS02 extension display cables from EM3EV. If you want to remain sane and...
How Not To Install A California E-Bikes 100mm Axle In A BBS02

Karl Gesslein / May 12, 2015 I’ve done three conversions with Doug’s 100mm axle conversions for the BBS02. While the conversion kits he sells are great, they require more attention while installing that what I provided initially. Hopefully you can learn something from my stupid mistakes. For my initial review of the axle installation process check out this post. I recommend the kits for anyone who wants to convert an existing BBS02 to the 100mm axle kit and as is much cheaper to do so than to buy a new 100mm converted BBS02. 30 seconds with a can of spraypaint before you install the extension will keep the it from...
Biktrix New 100mm BBS02 – The Best Thing To Come Out Of Canada Since Peanut Butter

Karl Gesslein / August 8, 2015 The Biktrix 100mm kit is a BBS02 with these parts already fitted and installed to fit a 100mm fat-bike bottom bracket. I took one apart and I can attest that their logo really is printed on the axle. I’ve been a fan of the Canadian company Biktrix since they completed their first kickstarter for the Juggernaut BBS02 powered 750W fatbike in November of 2014. While several other ebike crowd-funding campaigns have made gross exaggerations about the capabilities of their bikes, the Biktrix crew seemed knowledgeable and honest from the start. Their interest in the BBS02 didn’t stop with just funding,...
BBS02 Fat bike conversion kit from California E-bikes
Posted by Tom Lee on
Karl Gesslein / January 13, 2015 After much anticipation I purchased the new tap kit and 3 axle kits from Doug at California E-bike. After doing my first BBS02 conversion I was not disappointed. The BBS02 is a fantastic drive unit and the 750W unit designed for the US market fits a wide range of 68-73mm Bottom bracket bikes. Since the bottom bracket is the strongest part of the frame there is no need for torque arms or reinforcing brackets. This unit is quiet and stealthy due to its small size and barely perceptible hum. The only drawback is the weak controller and...
