I Void Warranties : Hacking The Bafang Ultra Max Mid-Drive Ebike Drive

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / November 23, 2017 There is half a dozen low power torque sensing mid drives on the market right now that advertise themselves as being between 250 and 750 Watts. The one thing that all these ‘low power’ drive units have in common is that there is absolutely no way to program the drive unit to do anything much other than what it is set to do from the factory. The most frustrating part is that often they have built-in speed limiters that you have to install special defeat-devices to overcome. Many of these defeat devices plug-in between the speedo and...

How To Reprogram Your BBS02\BBSHD So You Can Use Pedal Assist On SingleTrack Without Getting Killed

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / January 15, 2016 Ever since I got my first BBS02 2 years ago I pretty much gave up on pedal assist for anything except riding on the road. The stock programming on the BBS02 from the factory is absolute crap and it takes a lot of pedal movement to get the PAS system to activate and then after you stop pedaling the motor keeps running for up to 25 feet depending on your current speed. Can you imagine going full-bore in the woods and having a problem so you stop pedaling and the motor keeps driving you forward another...

A Hacker’s Guide To Programming The BBS02 & BBSHD

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / June 26, 2015 One way that the BBS02 middrive unit shines over other competition like the Bosch is the ability to program the controller yourself. Although the process of programming the controller will void any warranty that you got with the unit, to many people the risk of voiding their warranty is outweighed by the possibility of getting more performance or having the PAS settings more to their liking. There are 3 settings that most reputable resellers of the BBS02 will set for you. Low Voltage Shutoff (in Volts) Limited Current (in Amps) Speed Limit   Update: The BBSHD is programmed...

Programming The BBS02 & BBSHD Without Frying Your Controller And Losing Your Sanity

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / March 17, 2015 For information on the programming parameters and what they do you should check out The Hackers Guide to Programming the BBS02 located here. UPDATE: The BBSHD is programmed in the exact same way with the same software as the BBS02. Just make sure you set the Limited Current (Amps) to 30 not 25 which is the most the BBS02 can handle. I’ve watched this thread on Endless-Sphere and spent a few hours building several of my own cables (as shown here) using different USB\Serial adapters bought on ebay and BBS02 extension display cables from EM3EV. If you want to remain sane and...

How Not To Install A California E-Bikes 100mm Axle In A BBS02

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / May 12, 2015 I’ve done three conversions with Doug’s 100mm axle conversions for the BBS02. While the conversion kits he sells are great, they require more attention while installing that what I provided initially. Hopefully you can learn something from my stupid mistakes. For my initial review of the axle installation process check out this post.  I recommend the kits for anyone who wants to convert an existing BBS02 to the 100mm axle kit and as is much cheaper to do so than to buy a new 100mm converted BBS02. 30 seconds with a can of spraypaint before you install the extension will keep the it from...
