If electric vehicles (EVs) are to become common features of the sustainable urban mobility scene, safe and effective charging facilities are needed.

What charging infrastructure is currently in place to charging needs?

Charging infrastructures should be ubiquitous and meet 3 broad categories of needs:

• Long-stop charging overnight at home or in the workplace – 6-8 hours.
• Short-stop charging of 1-2 hours at dedicated facilities in public places like car parks and shopping malls.
• Quick-stop top-ups on long journeys or for intensive use –15-20 minutes.

I routinely drive what might be a one-day trip in a Tesla or a gasoline car in two or three days. I have done one particular route 5 times, relying on Electrify America stations and a few EVgo stations. I rely on Electrify America simply because the EVgo infrastructure in my part of the country is quite incomplete. For this reason, after the first trip, I gave a thank you to Electrify America....

There is a lot to consider when it comes to purchasing an electric-car charging station, as it can affect the ownership experience and the convenience of using the car.

While some owners of plug-in hybrids may stick with the 120-volt charging cord that comes with the car, virtually all buyers of battery-electric models should install a charging station at home or where they park—if that's possible.
