ARE E-BIKES ECO-FRIENDLY

Posted by Tom Lee on

Is an E-bike really better for the environment

According to the National Travel Survey, an astounding 68% of all car journeys only travel five miles or less. Furthermore, almost 1/4 of car journeys travel an astronomically small 1 mile or less! To put that into an example, if all Americans who drive five miles or less were to switch to an electric bike for just one day a week, it would have the same effect as taking 1 million cars off the road instantly!

So, why not look at an alternative to save your car fuel and also help save the planet?

Electric bicycles are a fantastic solution to cutting down unnecessary car trips, and if you live in the city, they can take you to your destination just as fast. They are considered zero-emission vehicles as they utilize clean energy. It should be known that e-bikes do consume energy, though in comparison to other modes of transport, and e-bike is:

  • Almost equal in environmental impact as a conventional bicycle
  • 6 times more energy-efficient than rail transport
  • 13 times more energy-efficient than a family car
  • 18 times more energy-efficient than a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV)

In the UK around a fifth or 21%, of greenhouse gas emissions come from road transport. This is even higher for other countries such as India, in which road transport tallied up to a staggering 80% of greenhouse emissions.

E-biking is a clear option for a green commute to work, the park, or the shops. On top of this, recharging the battery of an electric bike won’t break the bank. This, combined with the rise in congestion charges, parking, and fuel, makes investing in an electric bike a beneficial payoff in the long run.

If you are worried about a lack of speed, don’t be! E-bikes generally pack up to 25 mph of power to help you zoom from point A to B. The average speed of automobiles on the roads of London is 7.5 mph according to the TFL, so you could even get to your destination faster by using an electric bike!

There are numerous benefits of switching to an e-bike, so if you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint or even find a faster way to travel through the city, using an e-bike can solve both these problems!
