Build An All Wheel Drive Electric Fatbike That Puts Out 1400 Watts Total For ~$1000

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / February 3, 2015 After making 4 different electric fatbike prototypes out of Bikes Direct aluminum fatbikes I’ve decided to try a different route entirely. The new Storm fatbike is selling their entire fatbike with battery, charger and motor for a measly $499 (till this Friday 2/6/2015). Considering that I usually drop more than that on a motor or battery alone this is a screaming deal that just can’t be ignored. The last time I went shopping for decent 4.9 inch tires they ran about $130 each shipped, and for rims that wide the cheapest I can find is $50 each and...

Sun Kiss – Deadeye Monster DIY BBS02 42lb Single-Track Snow Machine $900 (w/o Batteries)

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / February 19, 2015 I added a Nexus 3 IGH to this bike after about a year of thrashing on it, and it was worth it. Review is here. I went for a ride on my newest build and was incredibly happy with the results. This is my third BBS02 fatbike conversion and I have to say it is probably the best yet. Although the donor bike is a single-speed Deadeye Monster, I found that with the proper gears in the front and the rear, the motor had enough speed range that I didn’t really need to shift. Riding along on...

Walmart Dolomite And A BBS02 Make A Dirt Cheap Commuter That Will Eat Up Hills

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / February 20, 2015 We’ve been promising this Dolomite/BBS02 build for a while and we’re happy to say it works beautifully. This is one of the least expensive BBS02 builds you can do yourself and without a battery it should set you back ~$700 and weighs in without a battery at 59 lbs. A BBS02 mounted fatbike. Yes please! The Mongoose Dolomite was originally incorrectly advertised on the Walmart site as an ‘Aluminum’ frame but now it correctly says ‘rigid steel’. The website also incorrectly lists the weight at 45 lbs but is actually 49lbs shipped and assembled (still 11lbs...

The Green Machine – DIY Bullseye Monster BBS02 100mm Conversion ~$1750 and 46 lbs (without battery)

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / March 2, 2015 I built an electric fatbike out of a $499 Bullseye Monster from Bikes Direct several months ago but it took me this long to really get it working right. Initially I had a lot of problems with the drive train skipping and the chain dislodging and getting jammed between the chainwheel and the adapter. After replacing the cassette with a SRAM PG-850 (nickel-plated steel 32-11) and adding a n-gear jump stop chain guide I feel like I finally have a build that is worth duplicating. The finest Single Track\Double Track snow machine I have built yet The Bullseye Monster is an electric fatbike...

The Reaper – AWD Boris X9 DIY BBS02 100mm 12T Mac ~$2200 57 lbs (w/o battery)

Posted by Tom Lee on

Karl Gesslein / March 9, 2015 I’ve built a couple of AWD fatbikes out of my Boris X9 donorbike that I bought for $700 on BikeIsland.com, all have been something of a disappointment. I have to admit that this current build firmly joins my other AWD builds in the ‘disappointing’ category. It is a startling contrast to have a MAC motor and a BBS02 on the same bike with separate throttles and be able to switch back and forth in real-time between the two motors. While the front wheel motor is useful when the bike bogs down in deep snow and gets stuck, most of the...
