Electric Bikes: How Watts, Volts, and Amp Hours Impact Performance

Posted by Tom Lee on

BY ARMANDO ROGGIO / LEAVE A COMMENT If you want to know how fast or powerful an electric bike will be, you need to understand watts (W), volts (V), and amp hours (Ah) as these energy measurements apply to ebike motors and batteries. Otherwise, “attempting to compare ebike power ratings is a great way to lose your sanity. That’s because ‘rated power,’ the metric some manufacturers use, doesn’t equal a motor’s actual power output or maximum potential power output,” wrote Dan Roe in Bicycling magazine. Rather, as an electric bike owner or shopper, you need to understand how these electrical measurements impact an ebike’s performance....

Electric Bikes Could Help to Combat Type-2 Diabetes

Posted by Tom Lee on

BY ARMANDO ROGGIO / LEAVE A COMMENT Riding an electric bike helped adults with type-2 diabetes improve aerobic conditioning and lower cardiometabolic risk factors, according to a recent study. Researchers at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom monitored the impact riding an electric bike had on participants with type-2 diabetes. The study’s 18 subjects rode their electric bikes an average of 13 miles per week for 20 weeks. The subjects enjoyed a 10.9 percent increase in predicted maximal aerobic power over the course of the study. And participants reached 74.7 percent of their maximum heart rate while riding an electric bike compared...

Hydraulic versus Mechanical Brakes for Electric Bikes

Posted by Tom Lee on

BY TEAM EVELO / LEAVE A COMMENT An electric bike can help you climb a steep hill with ease, but it is your electric bike’s braking system that will help you descend that same hill safely. All of the bikes we build at EVELO have braking systems selected specifically to match the bike’s performance, but there are still important differences, for example, between hydraulic brakes and mechanical brakes. In this video, Alex explains some of those differences and does his best to help you make the best choice for your next electric bike. If you would like more information about how to choose...

What is the Difference Between a Cadence Sensor and a Torque Sensor on an Electric Bike?

Posted by Tom Lee on

BY TEAM EVELO / LEAVE A COMMENT Cadence or torque sensors tell an electric bike’s pedal-assist system (PAS) when to engage the motor and propel the e-bike forward. Although just about any combination of a cadence sensor, a torque sensor, or both will work, each sensor type can have an impact on an electric bike’s performance and ride. So what is the difference between a cadence sensor and a torque sensor on an electric bike? A common response in the bicycle manufacturing industry is that a cadence sensor determines if you are pedaling while a torque sensor measures how hard you are pedaling. Pedal Assist...
